Support Fund for Skilled Youth and Professionals

solar panels and water windmill in Adventure community

Every year young people from around the world express their wish to live and work in Auroville but many are not able to do so due to lack of personal funds.

While some of the youth come with the intention of joining Auroville, others simply come to take part in the Auroville experiment and contribute their energy and work for a period of time. Most of them come from India , the USA and Europe, from countries of the former Soviet Union, from the South Asian countries and even from South America and Korea . From the African continent appeals are made as well.

Many of these young people, also some of those from developed countries, find it difficult to finance their stay in Auroville if it is longer than a few months.

Auroville, on the other hand, needs young and qualified people to help build its “City of Dawn .” In certain work areas Auroville is desperately looking for skilled and competent professionals. Hence, in order to make it financially possible for individuals with the qualifications required, we have established a fund that will help covering the basic living costs – room, board, vehicle and some pocket money if required.

How many professional volunteers can be supported depends on how much funding is available. So far the funds came through the Fund for World Education and from friends and well wishers of Auroville. Many people see the development of Human Resources as most important for Auroville's development.

We invite you to participate. With a contribution of $ 200 you make it possible for a young Professional to work for one month for Auroville.

A donation of any amount is welcome.
For information: unity@auroville.org.in

The fund has been operating for one and a half year and so far we have supported 7 young people.

Currently, the following work opportunities exist in Auroville for which we would seek professional volunteers.

Blue Light Open Source Service and Research Centre

Blue Light Open Source Service and Research Centre has established a research lab, in which Open Source software is tested, modified and developed before it goes into use for the service of the community. Specific training in those applications which are implemented have been and will continue to be offered. Based on research results, Blue Light will offer Auroville services, working groups and schools a safe computing environment utilizing Open Source software solutions.

If you have expertise in this field that you would like to develop further, then we have projects for you! You are invited to help lead one or more of our research projects in which your knowledge will help to increase the use of Open Source within Auroville. Come to Auroville and share with the community your enthusiasm and interests (minimum of three months recommended). In Auroville, we are always pleased to meet new people. The exchange of ideas, skills and talent with volunteers is mutually beneficial.

Some of our projects include research (and possibly implementation) in the following areas:

  • Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) and thin client set-ups
  • OpenExchange Groupware
  • Drupal Content Management System expertise
  • Database for the community
  • Amanda Back-up solutions
  • Ubuntu SoHo server
  • Wiki-tools
  • On-line tools in office environments
  • LDAP
  • MySQL professionals to build an Auroville wide database

We feel that this research will be considerably enhanced when professionals, students and others interested in Open Source come to Auroville. We are happy to discuss a volunteer-offered project if there is a particular field of interest which isn't indicated above. Research is always 'on-the-move' so if you'd like, we can send you the most up-to-date information when you contact us. So, if you want to volunteer in a service-oriented work environment with Open Source and be part of the unique experiement of Auroville then why don't you write us: bluelight at auroville dot org dot in?
