Brochure on Auroville
Auroville, a dream takes shape
The project of Auroville, started in 1964 with the object of becoming a city dedicated to an implementation of the ideal
of human unity, was formally inaugurated on February 28th, 1968. It is located 10 kilometers North of Pondicherry and counts about 1500 residents at present. The Mother (a French lady) who was in charge of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a community which developed in Pondicherry around the Indian yogi Sri Aurobindo, was the moving force behind the founding of Auroville and followed its development closely until her departure in 1973.
This brochure has endeavoured to highlight how The Mother envisioned Auroville from its inception, the achievements realised in thirty years, and the difficulties for implementing the guidelines which she has given.
Another brochure called "Auroville", published by the Auroville Publication Department, gives more emphasis on the researches done in Auroville, research in human unity, in organisation and economy, in education, in the bioregion and sustainability, in village action.
A third one, "Experience! Auroville", will give, in a living manner, a lot of tips for visitors from 3 days to 3 months.
The most comprehensive information on Auroville, as it is to-day, is found in "The Auroville handbook" which covers
almost everything which exists in Auroville.
