Poonam Mulchandani                                            Gallery

PoonamShortly after graduating from the Kamla Raheja Institute for Architecture and environmental studies, Mumbai. I came to Auroville in 1997.

In the beginning, I started with a hands-on training, building “Legaums”, a concept of individual housing units, using the Nubian technique, which turned out to be a tactile learning process that was missed in the years of architectural education.
During this period I encountered and worked together with a few environmentalists in the field of conservation (water, soil, biodiverse species of trees, and vegetables). These encounters inspired my architecture immensely.
Since then, I have always worked independently, of course with a lot of guidance from my seniors in AV and Bombay, exploring ideas, concepts, materials through the few projects that I built:

  • Students' housing units, Alibaug.
    (With Ar. Bijoy Jain)1998-99
  • Farm house in the outskirts of Pune
    1998-99,
  • Yoga training Centre, Mulshi,
    (with Ar. Anupama Kundoo) 1998-99,
  • Green workers' accommodation, Revelation, Auroville, 1999-2000,
  • Caretakers' house , Botanical Garden, Auroville, 2000-01
  • Annadana Seed Center, Botanical Garden,
    Auroville, 2002-03
  • New Kindergarten, Centerfield,
    Auroville, 2003-04
